Dull and dry skin is never a good look. With dermaplaning, patients can expect to unleash a radiant complexion. Dermaplaning is a great noninvasive treatment for patients who wish to brighten their appearance. Not sure how to prepare for your dermaplaning treatment? Let’s talk a little more about what dermaplaning is and some tips you should know before going to your first dermaplaning appointment.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a noninvasive skin rejuvenation treatment that involves using a sharp razor or blade to gently scrape and exfoliate the skin. This treatment is perfect for those who are looking to reduce the appearance of small hairs on the face – called vellus hairs – and get rid of dull or dry skin. At Privé Aesthetics, a dermaplaning treatment is often followed by a hydrating mask or mild chemical peel for enhanced results.
Preparing for Your Dermaplaning Appointment
Preparing for your dermaplaning treatment doesn’t have to be intensive, as it is a surface-level treatment. That being said, there are some tips we provide our patients when they schedule their dermaplaning appointments with us. These tips include the following:
Skip Out on Makeup
When you come in for your dermaplaning appointment, your skin should be clean and free of any makeup or lotions. If you do have makeup on for your appointment, your aesthetician is going to have to remove it to perform your treatment. By avoiding makeup before your appointment, you provide your aesthetician with a clean canvas to work with. Following your treatment, we may ask that you avoid wearing makeup for a few hours to let your skin breathe and heal.
Avoid Sunbathing or Tanning
Performing a dermaplaning treatment on skin that’s been burned or damaged by the sun can be nearly impossible. Not only is it uncomfortable for you, but it’s difficult for the aesthetician to navigate as well. For this reason, we recommend staying out of the sun as much as possible for about a week leading up to your dermaplaning appointment. It may be tough, but we promise it’s worth it.
Reschedule Your Botox Appointment
You may think you can knock out your Botox and dermaplaning treatments in the same visit, but we suggest you schedule them as separate appointments. Botox can take several days to really settle into the skin and provide patients with the desired results. If your aesthetician performs a dermaplaning treatment at the same time as or too soon after a dermaplaning, your Botox has the potential to move under the surface of the skin and begin affecting areas it was not intended to. We recommend saving your Botox treatment for a short period of time after your dermaplaning appointment.
Don’t Exfoliate Prior to Dermaplaning
Many of our patients have a habit of regularly exfoliating their skin as a part of their regular skincare routine. Because dermaplaning is a treatment to exfoliate the skin, patients should ensure that their aesthetician has a surface area to exfoliate. Some at-home exfoliants also have the tendency to aggravate the skin, which can make it difficult to dermaplane. For this reason, we ask our patients to stop exfoliating about 5-7 days prior to their dermaplaning appointment.
