Botox and Dysport are effective medical spa treatments used to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. These FDA-approved cosmetic injections offer a quick, affordable solution to help achieve younger looking skin. Read on to find out more about these treatments, and how they can benefit you.
Botox and Dysport are injectable neuromodulators. They work by altering nerve activity, temporarily blocking communication between nerves and muscles, to relax specific facial muscles. These treatments help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines that develop as a result of repeated muscle contractions. Both injections come from the botulinum toxin, a neurotoxic protein, which when administered in small amounts, is safe to use. Although Botox and Dysport share some similarities, there are differences to be aware of when deciding which treatment is best suited for your needs.
What Is Botox?
Botox has multiple uses. In medicine it is used for therapeutic treatment of certain medical conditions including chronic migraines, spasticity, severe underarm sweating, and an overactive bladder.
Cosmetically, Botox is used to temporarily improve the appearance of many different types of moderate to severe facial wrinkles, including forehead lines, crow’s feet (laughter) lines, and glabellar (frown) lines. The treatment works by reducing muscle activity that leads to wrinkles, noticeably smoothing out facial lines.
Botox is a quick cosmetic treatment that can be carried out in as little as 10 minutes. Treatment may cause minor pain at the injection site, but it doesn’t require any downtime or recovery period, allowing you to get on with your normal activities.
Typically, it takes around a week to see the results of Botox, with peak results developing at around 2 weeks. The effects of Botox are temporary, lasting on average 3-4 months, so treatment will need to be repeated to sustain results.
How Does Dysport Compare To Botox?
Dysport, when used for cosmetic purposes, is only FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe glabellar lines (more commonly referred to as frown lines or the “11s” that appear between the eyebrows), unlike Botox, which can be used to treat a variety of aesthetic issues.
Dysport has been found to be a highly effective treatment that can significantly improve moderate to severe glabellar lines. It is injected into five points between and above your eyebrows, to temporarily prevent muscle contractions that cause frown lines, whilst allowing the rest of your face to still move naturally. It has been reported that Dysport can offer more natural looking results compared with other injectable neuromodulators, which can result in a more ‘frozen’ appearance. An advantage of this treatment is that it can help to reduce facial lines, without changing movement of the rest of the face.
Treatment typically takes 10-20 minutes, and as with Botox, there is no downtime involved, making it easy to fit a treatment into your work day. Dysport has been reported to offer quicker results than treatments such as Botox, with results typically appearing within 2-3 days. Results are not permanent and last around 4 months, but many people who have had Dysport report results lasting as long as 5 months.
Dysport is not recommended for adults over the age of 65, and as with any type of treatment, there is a small risk of side effects, such as pain at the injection site, nose and throat irritation, and headaches.
If you are looking for a quick, effective wrinkle treatment, you may be a candidate for a medical spa treatment such as Botox or Dysport. Discuss your skin-care goals with a highly trained, board-certified, and professional provider. They can help you decide which treatment option is best to help you achieve the results you are looking for.
