PRP (platelet-rich plasma) facials have recently become a popular skincare treatment as an alternative to traditional facials. In a PRP treatment, your aesthetician will take a small sample of your own blood from your arm; the sample is then processed, concentrated, and injected into the skin, helping rejuvenate the complexion using your own cells.
The natural growth factors and proteins in the platelet-rich plasma help smooth the skin and minimize the appearance of wrinkles, scars, and areas of discoloration. PRP also helps the body produce more collagen and generate more healthy skin cells. Of course, platelets are best known for their role in forming scabs, but they do much more than that in healing throughout the body.
Let’s talk about what you can expect from a PRP facial, and where you can go in Dallas near the SMU campus for world-class beauty treatments that will make your skin look simply radiant.
Preparing for a PRP Facial
For the facial, your aesthetician will first take a sample of your blood using a small needle. The sample will then be placed into a device called a centrifuge, which will separate the platelets from the other components of the blood – such as the red blood cells and white blood cells.
The platelets are then concentrated within the plasma, which is the liquid part of the blood. At this point, a topical anesthetic will be applied to your face to prepare it for the treatment.
How Microneedling Works
Once the anesthetic has numbed the skin on your face, your provider will use a roller over your face to make tiny, superficial pricks in the skin. This is called microneedling, and the small punctures in the skin will allow the PRP to penetrate the skin and help stimulate collagen production.
These small punctures in the skin enable the PRP to soak both beneath the skin and on top of it, allowing the treatment to penetrate multiple dermal layers. You may experience mild pain and some slight and temporary bruising from the microneedling, but it will produce a wonderful glow in a day or two.
What to Expect After PRP Treatment
You will be able to drive home right after the procedure and resume your normal activities. Your aesthetician may ask you to avoid wearing makeup or harsh skin treatments for one or several days after the PRP facial. You’ll also want to protect your skin by avoiding sun exposure as much as possible while your skin heals.
You may need multiple treatments to start seeing results, and it may take several weeks for results to first appear. If your skin is quite loose or you have extreme sun damage, more invasive treatments may be a better choice to achieve smooth skin.
